About CHAKO Zanzibar
CHAKO is a social enterprise in Zanzibar where sustainability and creativity meet. The company was founded with a clear mission: to reduce waste, create local employment, and demonstrate that design can also be circular. CHAKO means "yours" in Swahili — a name that symbolizes ownership, connection, and pride.
How the products are made
All CHAKO products are made entirely by hand from recycled glass and local wood. Empty wine bottles from hotels and restaurants are given a new life as vases, drinking glasses, lamps, and candle holders. Each piece is carefully cut, polished, and assembled by local makers, with an eye for detail and quality.
Social impact
CHAKO provides work and training to young people in Zanzibar, with special attention to women seeking economic independence. Through training, guidance, and fair wages, a sustainable future is created for dozens of families on the island. The organization operates according to fair trade principles and is building an inclusive local economy step by step.
Environmental impact
CHAKO contributes directly to waste reduction in Zanzibar by keeping hundreds of thousands of bottles out of the waste stream annually. Materials are reused, transport is kept to a minimum, and production takes place locally in a workshop that runs on solar energy. In this way, waste is transformed into valuable, sustainable design pieces.
Impact with every purchase
Every purchase of a CHAKO product helps make the island cleaner, supports local makers, and stimulates circular thinking in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Sustainable design, with a positive impact that reaches beyond aesthetics.
